In 2020, the City of Allen began planning for a phased-in, citywide deployment of an Advanced Meter Infrastructure (AMI), commonly known as "smart" water meters. AMI will offer Allen water customers several benefits, such as added insight and more control over their water consumption and increased confidence in the accuracy of water bills.
There are many types of smart meters and features from which to choose. The City of Allen has contracted with Jacobs Engineering Group to help it identify the functions and system options that best meet customer preferences and operational needs, then to create evaluation criteria that will ensure the City selects the best meter vendor to meet those needs.
The switch to AMI is a complex process and must be planned in a way that does not cause customers any inconvenience. With more than 33,000 meters impacted, full implementation is expected no earlier than Fall 2022.
Customers will have the opportunity to provide feedback on desired program and communication features related to the new technology. Details will be shared on this page once available.
Investing in AMI has been a strategic priority of Allen City Council for several years. On November 10, 2020, the council approved spending $821,708 to move forward with the planning process. View details or watch the full council presentation.
